5 Stars New Battery for Old Makita
I got my Makita drill used, several years ago, when a sheet metal construction group replaced their old Makitas with a newer version. My Makita came with two batteries. Recently, just when my sons were beginning a project during which my Makita would be used extensively, one of the old batteries died. I found a 9-3/5-Vold NiCad replacement battery on Amazon; the price was very good, so I ordered two of this item.

The batteries arrived in excellent condition, in the time frame promised. I am very pleased to report that my old Makita is acting like a new drill with the new batteries, and my sons’ project has gone much more quickly because of the “new energy” these batteries provide.

These XRP batteries are a lot better than the original battery if your drill was made after about 1999. My original batteries only lasted about 3-4 years on my new drill (purchased 2004). I have a Dewalt 14.4V I bought in 1994 and still use the original batteries. One word of caution, the XRP batteries will not fit in the older drill case whether on or off the drill because they are larger. The older case has a more molded appearance on the inside and is double wall plastic.

I was disappointed in the DeWalt 14.4 volt batteries that came with my drill/driver. When one totally died during a project I sent my wife out to get a replacement battery. She returned with a NiCad version which I loved. It holds a charge extremely well and lasts much, much longer between charges. I was so impressed that I got a second one and recycled my remaining (operable) original battery. It makes using the drill much more practicle.

Bought a set of DeWalt tools, which included two XRP 14.4v batteries and a charger over four years ago. I didn’t really use the set much until the last two years, when I suddenly had a couple of backyard projects. These batteries pack quite a charge, and provides plenty of power and duration, especially for the reciprocating saw and trim saw. Unfortunately, last weekend one of the batteries died out and wouldn’t take a charge anymore (it’s been on the wane for a couple months before that). I’m hoping the other one will continue to work, but now I’m stuck with only one working battery. I came nowhere near the advertised 1,200 charge/discharge cycles, so that was disappointing.

I’ve had these units for more than four years, so I can’t complain about one dying. While I agree that these batteries are excellent, and should be priced accordingly, I’m not sure they need to be quite that expensive. There are companies that’ll rebuild the battery pack, typically with longer-lasting sub-C cells, for less than the cost of a new one (but admittedly not by much). Based on trade reviews, the rebuilds either meet or exceed specifications, and I’m leaning that way not so much for the cost savings, but for the extended runtime.

So, in summary, these are absolutely great batteries. The NiCad technology is proven, dependable, and is suited well for high drain devices such as power tools. However, given the relative cost and simplicity of manufacturing a unit, you should be able to get more performance for less from a reputable battery rebuilder.

EDIT (12/04/2009): Bought a DeWalt DC9310 charger DeWalt DC9310 Heavy-Duty 7.2 Volt – 18 Volt 1 Hour Charger to replace DC9116 charger. The DC9310 was able to charge the dead DC9091 to ~12 volts consistently, indicating two dead cells. Battery is now usable again, but at 12 volts. While not ideal, it was good enough for me to effectively operate all the tools, thus extending the life of the battery.

3 Stars Loved it at first…
i purchased the Hitachi after reading initial reviews and quickly fell in love with it. After a few weeks of light use it began slipping out of gear and grinding so i replaced it with another thinking the fault was limited to my first. However the second began doing it within a year. And recently when i was replacing some outdoor floodlights i dropped the Hitachi from a one-story heighth into the grass and the hinge broke. It still works but is now taped into a straight, fixed position. This Hitachi screwdriver would be perfect with rigid components, but until then i’ll replace with a Dewalt or Bosch.

When I first bought it I was thrilled,so much I bought 2 more.

I got them reconditioned for $50.00 which was a bargain.

It was the first driver I had with a LED which was very helpful.

I use it for work,removing screws in appliances.The high speed 600RPM is great and the Battery lasts a long time.

Eventually I was less impressed though.

Out of the 3 I bought,I had to fix 2 of them for pinched wires inside,and 2 of the 3 LED’s stopped working.

Needed a lightwieght screwdriver to be used for daily benchtop electronics assembly. So for, this screwdriver has performed well. Many of the other drivers available were either too heavy (batteries) or could not be well operated in a vertical grasp.

I have owned and used this little tool for several years now and if it fell apart today I would buy another one. It is so light, dependable, tough and easy to carry. I would recommend this Hitachi Screwdriver to everyone. I have dropped it from second story buildings, used it to hammer in drywall anchors, drill masonry holes in brick and it just keeps on going. Also my little 2 year old boy uses it to play with and if he can’t tear it up it must be good.

I had been looking for a replacement for my old Craftsman electric screwdriver that was a workhorse on dozens of projects through the years. I saw this Hitachi in the stores but it was at that time over priced but then the pice came down. I was pulled to it due to it’s slim profile and the major advantage of being Li-Ion. This little guy is exactly what the doctor ordered for a compact workhorse doing small jobs around the house! I have my own business and it works execellent for all those misc things that have to be fixed, fastned, or drilled. I only wish it had a wall mount/charger to make easier to grab, going into a case can be cumbersome when you want to grab it and fix something quick. I highly recommend this cordless driver.

When I looked at my filter on my dust buster, I was shocked and disgusted by how incredibly filthy it was. I immediately went on-line to order some new ones. It was really easy to change out and I feel much better knowing there’s a clean filter.

I do not see this filter as being any more effective than the vf100. After using, i still find minute particals inside the filter; thus, the added espense is not warranted. Now to the important review: Amazon itself. When i learned the vacuum, and the filter came from two different places, and shipping would be charged for each, i found it impossible to cancel the order—for the filter. I am not pleased paying nearly as much for shipping as for the item purchased. Moreover, i am, highly, upset that the order could not be cancelled. I will think long & hard before placing another order with Amazon!!! When i kliked ‘edit’—to down-grade this filter to 3-stars—that was not an option. Amazon, your underwear is showing!

I’ve been happy with this filter. Although disposable, I’ve tapped it on rocks and blown it out with an air compressor, and have kept on using after nearly a year. Does a good job catching wood stove ashes and other fine dust.

4 Stars Batteries are good, but most chargers are not
I do not use my equipment with these batteries very often. I had found that they did not last many charges. When I opened up one of the standard chargers, I found that there is no circuitry to shut down the charging when the batteries are fully charged; the voltage supplied is not even pure DC. It is a wonder the batteries last as long as they do. I am using a different charger now and I expect much better life. It is nice to have a few batteries that several tools will use.
