I am away from home right now, and do not have access to my owner’s manual, but I would like to figure out if there is a way to check my messages remotely. I know some phones have codes and others use functions, like *26, does anyone have a similar phone and know what to do?

It needs caller ID, and answering machine and two handsets.
The phone only needs a one line connection since one of two is dedicated to credit card validations/Internet connections.
I have always had good luck with Panasonic, but I was wondering if there is any other brands that are as good or better.
